If you’ve been to the Brooklyn Public Library homepage recently, you may have noticed something different. The library has introduced a brand-new logo, the face of a systemic rebranding which they have outlined in their strategic plan. It’s a change that’s been three years in the making, researched through system-wide staff surveys and information gathered from over 1,500 households.
The goals are organized into six facets: education, access, culture, inclusion, space, and stewardship. Specific projects include a reconfiguration of the library’s services to prepare adults for computer-based GED tests, expansion of membership to over 50% of the Brooklyn population, and acquisition and inclusion of contemporary Brooklyn works. Also in the works are collaborations with groups such as Spaceworks and BRIC Arts, as well as a technical partnership with the New York Public Library to enable universal drop-off services across boroughs.
Inspired by the change, Brooklynology took a trip through the library’s logo history, spanning from bookplates on the library’s oldest materials (pictured right) to the familiar and recently departed black box.
The newest iteration is decidedly modern (evidenced by the missing letters) but warm and inviting with its bright blue color and lower-case lettering. It fits perfectly with what looks like a new slogan, the welcoming gesture of “Start Here.”
