In an attempt to research increasing taxi fares, USA Today and Taxi Fare Finder compared sixty US metropolitan areas based on rates for 1-, 5-, and 10-mile trips. New York barely got a mention!

The cheapest fares were found in Tulsa ($3.70 for one mile and $12.55 for five miles) and Detroit ($19.97 for 10 miles), while the most expensive cities were San Jose ($8.01 for one mile) and Honolulu ($24.92 for five miles and $41.61 for ten miles).

Inspired by this study, we decided to do our own fare finding. Using 6th Avenue and 1st Street as a central location, we compared fares for 1-, 5-, and 10-mile trips as they were quoted by local car services. Just to test out Taxi Fare Finder’s accountability, we also threw in their calculation per trip.

Here’s what we found:

Destination: Brooklyn Social, 335 Smith Street, Carroll Gardens (1.2 miles)
Arecibo (718) 783-6465: $8
Continental (718) 499-0909: $8
Eastern (866) 499-7177: $8
Taxi Fare Finder: $7.77 ($8.27 night/weekend)

Destination: Trash Bar, 256 Grand Street, Williamsburg (4.9 miles)
Arecibo: $16
Continental: $17
Eastern: $18
Taxi Fare Finder: $20.84 ($21.34 night/weekend)

Destination: JFK Airport (11.2 miles)
Arecibo: $38
Continental: $35
Eastern: $35
Taxi Fare Finder: $43.11 ($43.61 night/weekend)

So, we’re less expensive than the most expensive cities according to TFF, but TFF also thinks we’re more expensive than we are. Ah, who knows, who’s got $8 and wants to grab an Old Fashioned?
