We’re sad to hear that Rynn Berry, the 68-year-old man who collapsed while jogging in Prospect Park on New Year’s Eve, passed away not long after being identified by his half-brother following a wide-reaching effort to figure out who he was.

A health-conscious man who lived in Prospect Heights, he was known for books on vegetarianism and veganism, and his impact in that world can be seen by the response to his passing on Twitter.

“I’m heartbroken to learn that Rynn Berry died,” wrote Fran Costigan, an expert on vegan desserts. “He was a gentle soul whose life touched so many.”

“Rest in peace, Rynn Berry, vegan scholar, historian, activist, and warm, gentle spirit,” tweeted Tracye McQuirter, author of By Any Greens Necessary. ”I’ll miss you.”

The New York Times and DNAinfo both have lovely remembrances of him, with more thoughts from friends and colleagues. Our deepest condolences to all who knew him.

I had the opportunity to meet Rynn Berry a few years ago, when he gave a talk at a San Francisco Vegetarian Society potluck, and was staying at the home of Marti Kheel of Feminists for Animal Rights (FAR).

And a couple of years ago, during the World Vegetarian Day Festival in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, I gave Rynn a copy of my manuscript, “Should Hindus Be Vegan?” which he graciously accepted.

I’ve said before that I agree with vegetarian historian Rynn Berry that the evidence (Scriptural, historical, theological, etc.) that Jesus was a vegetarian “is circumstantial at best, but nonetheless compelling.”

Rynn Berry was a gentleman and a scholar, yes. And his research and his words have touched many… vegetarians and meat-eaters alike.

My thoughts, and I think I can safely say, the thoughts of the abolitionist, animal rights, vegetarian and vegan community are with Rynn Berry during his time of passing away.

How many times are you going to make the same pointless comments? You were gay for this guy or something? You sound like a schoolgirl.
