To celebrate our fantastic new midweek Barclays Center Greenmarket, we’ll be highlighting one farmer or vendor each week– finding out what brought them into the business, what their favorite items are, and how they suggest we prepare them. This week, we meet Hal Goodale III of Long Island’s Goodale Farms.
Owner: Hal Goodale III
Where are you based? Riverhead, NY
What do you specialize in? We are Long Island’s only full-service dairy, where you can get milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, ice cream, and frozen yogurt from the milk of the animals on our farm. We also specialize in making sauerkraut, pickles, salsa, jams, jellies, and salads from the produce on our farm. We believe that the way our grandparents ate is the way we need to go back to eating.
How did you get into the business, and how long have you been doing it? My family has been farming for over 150 years; I have been at it for about five.
What is one crop or product you’re especially excited for this season? Our feta cheese is award-winning and great.
How would you suggest a customer prepare it? It goes great with many types of salads. For the summer, a nice watermelon salad with feta and mint is refreshing.
What do you like to do when not farming? Spend time with family and read.
And for good measure, meet some of the adorable Goodale Farms animals:
