It’s week two of the Winter Warriors challenge at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket, so make your way to the info tent while you’re shopping. Check in each week and get some rewards: a prize at the six week mark, and entry into a final raffle if you make it to ten.
Whether you’re shopping today at GAP or tomorrow at the Park Slope Farmers Market, it’s a good time to stock up on some fresh winter veggies. More specifically? Brussels sprouts. Heaps of them! If you’re intimidated by the notion of sorting through the selection, here are some tips courtesy of The Kitchn:
Pick Brussels sprouts that feel tightly compacted and hard when you squeeze them. Smaller sprouts tend to be sweeter-tasting, while larger sprouts are more cabbage-like. Sprouts are equally good whether you buy them on or off of the stem, and they will keep for several weeks in the fridge.
And once you’ve got them home, you can start thinking about how you’ll prepare them: stir-fried? dijon braised? simply roasted? All of the above? Perfect.
The GAP Greenmarket runs Saturdays from 8am-4pm at Grand Army Plaza. The Park Slope Farmers Market runs Sundays from 10am-4pm along 4th Street at 5th Ave.
