Well, it turns out that it was more than just fresh paint.
The 7th Avenue restaurant Oshima shut down for renovations two weeks ago, but the spot has reopened under a new name and new ownership. Now called Sawa, the Japanese fusion restaurant has expanded its menu, offering not only sushi ($3-13/roll) but also noodles, teriyaki, and hibachi ($9-30/entree).
They’ve got an impressive array of appetizers, too, including mini burgers, peking duck, rack of lamb, and Japanese Pizza (eel, avocado, kani, caviar, and cream cheese) in addition to the more expected edamame, gyoza, shumai, and the like. They also offer sushi and bento lunch specials ($9-15).
As for those renovations, the place isn’t much different, other than new tables and chairs and a fresh coat of white paint above the stone wall. Oshima’s sushi was one of the better options in town, so hopefully Sawa follows suit!
Sawa is located at 71 7th Avenue, (718) 783-1888. Open 11:30 am – 11 pm Monday through Thursday, 11:30 am – midnight on Friday, 12:30 pm – midnight on Saturday, and 12:30 – 11 pm on Sunday. Free delivery ($10 minimum).
