New Year’s Day: Brunch in Park Slope

It’s New Year’s Eve! Have you worked out your big plans? The night comes with a lot of pressure to have the Best Time Ever, but last year I rang in the New Year with a hero sandwich and a copy of P.S. I Love You and my year treated me well, so, who knows. What it’s really about, though, is New Year’s Day: a bank holiday that expects nothing of you other than lazing about, recapping the events of the previous night, and optimistically contemplating the year to come.

And where better to do that than over brunch? Here are some local spots that are open tomorrow:

1. Alchemy, 56 Fifth Avenue at Bergen Street, (718) 636-4385

• Hours: 11:00am-4:30pm
• Price: $8-20
• Hair of the Dog: Mimosa ($8), Bloody Mary ($7)
• Try: Corn Beef Hash & Eggs ($11.50)– referred to by one Yelp reviewer as the “best EVER.”

2. Aperitivo, 279 5th Avenue at 1st Street, (718) 369-1123

• Hours: 11:30am-4:00pm
• Price: $12.95, includes breakfast and coffee or tea
• Hair of the Dog: Unlimited Mimosa, Bloody Mary, Bellini, or straight champagne; additional $3.95
• Try: Ham & Ricotta Fritatte, served with potato latkes

3. Benchmark, 339 Second Street at 5th Avenue, (718) 965-7040

• Hours: 11:00am-4:00pm
• Price: A la carte $9-17; Two-Course Prix Fixe $14
• Hair of the Dog: Bellini, Mimosa, or Brazilian Sunrise ($7); or, for the more adventurous, the Bloody Benchmark ($6), made with Benchmark bourbon, homemade Jerky, and an “ancient secret recipe.”
• Try: Either (or both!) of the Eggs Benedict dishes– Jumbo Lump Crabcake or Braised Short Rib ($13)

4. Lobo, 188 Fifth Avenue at Berkeley Place, (718) 636-8886

• Hours: 11:30am-3:00pm
• Price: $6.50-10
• Hair of the dog: Strawberry Mimosa ($8), Bloody Maria ($8), Michelada ($7), Texas Tea ($7), Sangria ($6/22)
• Try: The Tulsa ($9)– the jalapeño cheese grits are creamy with just enough spice, and topped with two eggs and beans.

5. Miriam, 79 Fifth Avenue at Prospect Place, (718) 622-2250

• Hours: 10:00am-4:00pm
• Price: $8-14
• Hair of the Dog: Hot Spiced Cider ($9)
• Try: Mediterranean Crispy Dough ($14)– a favorite of the Israeli brunch, and described by one fan as “thick and chewy like pizza dough, slightly sweet and sticky like zeppole,” it comes with two eggs, shredded tomatoes, and hot chili sauce.

6. Rose Water, 787 Union Street at 6th Avenue, (718) 783-3800

• Hours: 10:00am-4:00pm
• Price: $15 prix fixe, includes entree and non-alcoholic beverage
• Hair of the Dog: Sake Bloody Mary ($8)
• Try: The seasonal crêpes– on the menu now is a Poached Pear Ricotta Crêpe with almonds, but the fresh and locally-sourced restaurant is known to switch it up with little notice.

7. Woodland, 242 Flatbush Avenue at 6th Avenue, (718) 398-7700

• Hours: 11:00am-4:30pm
• Price: $7-18
• Hair of the Dog: Entrees served with complimentary Bloody Mary or seasonal Mimosa
• Try: Something you can’t get at the other spots: raw oysters, prepared with horseradish and smoked mignonette ($8/3, $15/6)
