We’ve got some great news in the Park Slope culinary world. Macaroni and cheese joint Elbow Room will be opening a takeout counter alongside a full-service Texas-style barbecue restaurant on Flatbush Avenue between Dean and Bergen Streets.
The Elbow Room has a location in Newark and another at the Barclays Center, just a block away from the new Flatbush Avenue outpost. In addition to a takeout counter, the 229 Flatbush Ave. space will house a commissary kitchen where The Elbow Room will make its Barclays Center product. There will also be a “general store” that will sell charcuterie like boudin, andouille sausage, and pickles, said co-owner Chris Morgan.
The mac and cheese shop is all about artisanal nostalgia. Their aim might be to “remind you of the comfortability of home and the multitude of flavors you loved while growing up,” but they do it with a definite foodie flair.
Some notable menu items include the Chicken Tinga Mac (made with the popular Mexican spice or chipotle peppers, tomatoes, and chorizo), Poutine Mac, Jamaican Jerk Mac, Brats and Beer Mac (made with sausage and Bronx Brewery Ale, pictured above), and the classic Old School Mac with garlic bread crumbs.
The cheesy dishes will perfectly complement the neighboring BBQ joint, which will operate out of 227 Flatbush Avenue. According to DNAinfo, John Avila (who’s worked at the Austin, TX-based barbecue powerhouse Franklin) will be running the kitchen.
