First things first: how crazy are you right now for this weather? The days are so sunny, the air so crisp, and the afternoon is just begging you to step outside. Why not soak it up over lunch at Ideya?
The Latin bistro opened at Carlton and Flatbush Avenues in July, touting an impressive Caribbean-styled menu and what they swear to be the “perfect mojito.” It’s a wonderful lunch spot, offering reasonably priced sandwiches, tortas, empanadas, and other specialties, and– if you score a spot by the open wall– an uninhibited view of the bustling corner.
Our pick? The Medio Día ($11), a pressed sandwich with roasted pork, ham, swiss cheese, and pickles, served with a mixed green salad. The flavors are rich and hearty, with the mustard adding a nice tang and the melted swiss oozing from the crisped bread. It can be on the heavier side, but the good news is it reheats well.
The restaurant opens for lunch at 11:30am, and depending on how early you get there (and what your lifestyle allows), it might be a tad early for mojitos. But you’re cheating yourself if you settle for water. They’ve got fresh squeezed juices ($6.50), ginger beer ($3.50), batidos (a frothy blend of milk, coconut cream, fruit puree, nutmeg and ice, $6), or– our favorite– the fresh mint limeade ($5).
If you can save room, the dessert options are pretty tantalizing as well. We’ve got our eyes on the tres leches cake ($7), available in chocolate or vanilla.
