When it comes to brunch, there’s nothing better than Eggs Benedict. I’m a sucker for a good broken yolk, and sometimes the greasy deliciousness of meat, eggs, and Hollandaise is just heavenly. Other times, though, it’s nice to enjoy a meal that won’t put you out of commission for the rest of the day. What a nice surprise to find Bogota Latin Bistro‘s Arepa Benedict ($14): a lighter and tastier play on the original.
With poached eggs and Colombian chorizo on top of a sweet arepa, all covered in hogao sauce, the bennie hits the right sweet, spicy, and savory notes. The corn cake offers a more substantial (and flavorful) base than the usual English muffin, and the tomato and onion sauce won’t weigh you down like Hollandaise tends to do.
The meal is served with a light avocado and watercress salad, offering a nice veggie complement to the protein-rich dish. And if you like your brunches boozy, one of their many morning-friendly cocktails. We’re partial to the mimosas ($5), which are offered in guava, passion fruit, mango, and orange.
Bogota Latin Bistro is located at 141 5th Avenue, (718) 230-3805. Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday, 10 am – 3:45 pm. Open Monday through Thursday 11 am – 11 pm, Friday 11 am – 1 am, Saturday 10 am – 1 am, and Sunday 10 am – 11 pm.
