Valentine’s Day is a month away, which means that very soon just about every media outlet is going to sell us either love or the rejection of it. Love is the worst! Unless you’re in it, then it’s the best (but only with lots of diamonds)! If you are single, though, don’t spend the next few weeks wondering if you’re going to have a date. Use the day as an excuse to just have a good time, and grab tickets to any of these local, less romantic events– ranked, just in case, from most-date-friendly to least-date-friendly.
What: A celebration of or rant against love through power ballad music video hits from the 80s and 90s. The night will feature hand-subtitled music videos from Journey, Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Guns N’ Roses and more for the whole crowd to sing along to, as well as an air guitar competition, a power ballads costume contest, themed drinks (I’m curious about the “Eternal Flame”), and free Valentine Heart candy.
Tickets: $8, available here.
The Rejection Show: Valentine’s Day Heartbreak Haven
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street between 3rd & 4th Avenues
When: 8:30pm (8:00 doors)
What: The live comedy series The Rejection Show is celebrating the holiday with an evening of its best breakup, heartbreak, and love-related performances and stories, blending into an evening of love songs, live music, and all-around party. Hosted by Jon Friedman, the night will include performances by Lizz Winstead, Dave Hill, Julieanne Smolinski, Eliot Glazer, and more.
Tickets: $10-12, available here.
Unloveable: A Smiths & Morrissey Valentine’s Day
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street between 2nd & 3rd Avenues
When: 9:00pm (8:00 doors)
What: Legendary tribute band The Sons & Heirs brings the music of Morrissey to those who are looking not so much to celebrate singlehood and more to commiserate over it. The band is a bit of a big deal, having shared the stage with the likes of Smiths bassist Andy Rourke and Morrissey drummer Spencer Cobrin. Only for the strongest of heart.
Tickets: $12, available here.
