As it starts to get warmer (that’s happening soon, right?) more and more runners will be filling up the Park Drives. If you’ve ever walked past a pack and thought, “Hey, I want to do that,” guess what? There are two first-time-friendly races coming up, and registration is open.

You’ve still got time to sign up for the New York Road Runner Al Gordon Classic, this Saturday, February 23, at 8:00 a.m. The annual 4-miler is run in honor of the longtime NYRR board member, benefactor, and marathon runner (even into his 80s!), and the route is short and flat enough to be ideal for even first-time racers.

The race starts right in the middle of the park, on Center Drive, and loops east. Pre-registration is open through the day of the 22nd, and costs $23 for NYRR members and $37 for nonmembers. Registration at the event is $25 for members, $40 for nonmembers. Online registration is available here, but closes at midnight tonight; otherwise, you can download a paper application here.

If you’d like to run but need a little more time to prepare, you can set your sights on the NYU 5K for Physical Therapy Research, on Saturday, March 9, at 9:00 a.m. The annual walk/run is organized by the University’s Doctorate of Physical Therapy program, and helps fund research to improve conditions like arthritis, multiple sclerosis, stroke, diabetes, and cancer.

The race follows one counter-clockwise loop of the park, starting at the 15th Street entrance. Early registration runs through February 28 and costs $27; after that, you’ll pay $32. With your registration, you’ll get a short sleeve race shirt, special offers from sponsors, and food and drink at the event. You can register online here.

(UPDATED 2/20): Commenter Elizabeth tells us that there is yet another race coming up in the Park, this one also for a worthy cause. On Saturday, March 2 at 9:00 a.m., Communitas NYC will host the 5K for H2O. Registration is $20 and all proceeds go toward digging a well for the Pokot people of Kenya. More information and registration available here.
