scrabble for cheaters via 826NYC

826NYC might have the best fundraising events in town.

On Saturday April 6th, the Dave Eggers-founded non-profit tutoring organization is holding its 6th Annual Scrabble for Cheaters benefit. This year, John Hodgman, Peter Dinklage, and Jonathan Marc Sherman will join the rest in an elimination Scrabble tournament, and you and a teammate can sign up to compete against them for the coveted Cheater’s Cup.

The amount of cheating allowed is directly related to the amount of money you raise. The more you raise, the more cheats you can buy, including “Invent a Word,” “Buy A Vowel,” and “Create A Blank.” All of the proceeds directly support the free writing programs offered to New York City public school students by 826NYC.

Here’s how it works:

1. Sign up in teams of two. (There is a $50 registration fee per player, which can be used for cheating on game day.)

2. In the days leading up to the tournament, convince friends, coworkers, and family to Support Your Team and donate money for you to spend on cheats.

3. On game day, use the funds you raised to order from the Menu of Cheats.

4. At noon on April 6th, you and your teammate will compete against other teams for the glory that is The Cheater’s Cup, right at 826NYC!

So many things to love about it: the game, the cause, the cheating, the players (what if you got to say you beat Tyrion Lannister?) So sign up soon! It’s bound to be a popular event.
