Meet Wayne Bailey, The New 78th Precinct Community Council President

Wayne Baily via StreetsblogThe 78th Precinct Community Council — the people who serve to communicate between the precinct and the community — elected Wayne Bailey its new president at its June meeting (as well as Park Slope neighbor Joanna Oltman Smith to the position of vice president). Streetsblog has a nice introduction to the neighborhood activist, who’s a Community Board 8 member-at-large, a member of the Dean Street Block Association, and more.

With a lot of background in street safety issues, Bailey tells Streetsblog that he’s looking forward to working with the Deputy Inspector Michael Ameri and the 78th on the work they’ve already been doing to address these issues in our area.

“Some examples are keeping the bike lane open on Bergen Street between Sixth Ave and Flatbush Avenue with barricades, [and]reallocation of some combat parking to keep the sidewalks open to pedestrians and NYPD bike patrols,” he says. “These solutions are localized but have big impacts on safety for the general public because Bergen Street is a main bike commuter arterial into Manhattan.”

Check out the full Q&A here, and meet him in person — and bring any questions or concerns you may have for our local precinct — at the next 78th Precinct Community Council meeting, which comes up after the summer break on Tuesday, September 30 at 7:30pm (with a transportation safety meeting preceding it at 6:30pm) at the precinct at 65 6th Avenue.
