“This is a dream come true!” we heard a customer say as she was tasting the luxury truffle oil at O Live Brooklyn, the specialty olive oil and balsamic vinegar shop that opened its Park Slope location at 140 5th Avenue this past Saturday.
The space is a world away from its previous incarnation, E Lingerie, which closed in April. Two walls are currently lined with oils and vinegars — which yes, you can taste test — and the back has gift items like hand-made natural olive wood accessories, plus olive oil-based body products, salts, spices, and more still to come.
This is the second location from husband-and-wife team Greg Bernarducci and Elizabeth Weiss, who opened a shop in Williamsburg in 2012. They source their olive oils directly from growers in both hemispheres — we tried one from Spain that was fruity but mild, and totally delicious — and they import balsamic vinegars from Modena, Italy. Plus there are some unusual oils, like that truffle oil that so impressed one neighbor, and some interesting nut oils.
You can fill up a bottle — for the non-specialty items, 200 ml is $12.95, 375 ml is $19.95, and 750 ml is $35.95 — and if you bring your empty and washed bottle back for a refill, you get $1 off.
Since they opened Saturday, Greg says they’ve stayed pretty busy, reminding him that his original plan was a good one. When they were first looking for a space a few years ago, they’d been hoping to open in Park Slope, but ended up finding the space in Williamsburg. Greg says he’s glad to finally be able to come to this neighborhood.
“From here, we’re able to service more of south Brooklyn,” he said, before heading off to explain the differences between a couple balsamic vinegars to another curious customer.
O Live Brooklyn is located at 140 5th Avenue; hours are Monday through Saturday from 10am to 8pm and Sunday from 11am to 7pm.
