It’s time for some interactive maps: dog edition. In the Dogs of NYC project, WNYC has displayed the most popular breeds and names of dogs for each zip code. For those of us in 11215, it turns out we favor human names, with Lucy being the most popular and Charlie, Bella, Maggie, and Stella trailing close behind. Over in 11217, Daisy wins, but Bella and Lucy come in second and third. As for most popular breeds, mixed pups win in a landslide for both zip codes (497 in 11215, 204 in 11217), with Labrador Retrievers coming in at a far second (44 in 11215, 25 in 11217).
The site also has some games (guess which breeds are named what in which neighborhoods?) which, if nothing else, is a great way to lose a surprising amount of your day.
But if that doesn’t satiate your craving for pet statistics, Gothamist has compiled data on some doggy annoyances, specifically where they poop and how much noise they make. Here’s how we fared:
11215
Canine Noise Complaints: 288
Canine Waste Complaints: 60
Total Dog Complaints: 348
11217
Canine Noise Complaints: 154
Canine Waste Complaints: 19
Total Dog Complaints: 173
I’m curious to see how this ranks in proportion to population. Or, even further, to dog population. Won’t rest until we have all the facts on all the dogs!
